Alibaba Unveils New AI Model ‘Qwen 2.5,’ Claims It Beats DeepSeek-V
In a bold move to stay ahead in the AI race, Chinese tech giant Alibaba has launched an upgraded version of its artificial intelligence model, Qwen 2.5, claiming it outperforms the popular DeepSeek-V.
According to a report by Reuters, the timing of this release is unusual—it coincides with the first day of the Lunar New Year, a time when most Chinese citizens are on holiday with their families. This strategic move may have been influenced by DeepSeek, a rising Chinese AI startup that has made waves in recent weeks, challenging both global competitors and local rivals.
In an official WeChat post, Alibaba’s cloud unit confidently stated that Qwen 2.5 Max has surpassed major AI models, including GPT-4.0, DeepSeek-V 3, and LLaMA 3.1-405 (B)—pointing directly to OpenAI and Meta’s latest open-source AI models.
DeepSeek’s Rapid Rise Pressures Competitors
DeepSeek made headlines earlier this year when its AI assistant, launched on January 10, quickly overtook ChatGPT on the U.S. Apple App Store, becoming the top-rated free application. This unexpected success sent ripples through the U.S. tech industry, sparking concerns about China’s growing influence in AI.
DeepSeek’s breakthrough also pushed Chinese AI developers into action. Just two days after its release, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance responded by rolling out an update for its flagship AI model. The company claimed that its enhanced "AIME" model outperformed Microsoft-backed OpenAI in benchmark tests.
With competition heating up, China’s AI race is reaching new heights. As Alibaba, ByteDance, and DeepSeek battle for dominance, one thing is clear—China is rapidly closing the gap with Western AI giants, and the world is taking notice.
