How Does DeepSeek Compare to ChatGPT and Gemini?
DeepSeek's rapid rise has naturally sparked comparisons with its American counterparts, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. But how does it truly measure up?
AI models have become integral to various tasks, from writing assistance to coding and research. Users have long relied on ChatGPT for drafting blog posts, summarizing information, and even brainstorming creative ideas. DeepSeek, however, is proving to be a formidable challenger.
For example, when tasked with listing the greatest Scottish football players, both ChatGPT and DeepSeek highlighted familiar names, with legendary Liverpool and Celtic player Kenny Dalglish topping both lists. But while ChatGPT provided a structured response, DeepSeek went a step further, instantly generating a top-ten ranking complete with player positions, clubs, and achievements.
The AI Race Extends to Coding and Problem-Solving
DeepSeek’s impact isn’t just limited to writing—it’s making waves in the coding world too.
Javier Aguirre, an AI researcher at Samsung Medical Center, shared his experience with the tool, noting that DeepSeek outperformed ChatGPT-4 in solving a particularly complex coding issue. "I am quite impressed with DeepSeek," he wrote on LinkedIn. "Even ChatGPT-4 wasn’t able to reason through the problem, but DeepSeek solved it immediately and to the point."
Tech experts like Addy Osmani, Google’s Head of Chrome Developer Experience, have also taken notice. Osmani highlighted DeepSeek’s affordability compared to OpenAI’s models, stating that developers are already combining it with AI tools like Claude Sonnet from Anthropic—a firm that received a $4 billion investment from Amazon in 2023.

Brainstorming and Storytelling: A New AI Challenger Emerges
Beyond technical prowess, DeepSeek has also demonstrated its creative capabilities. When asked for ideas for a children’s story about a boy living on the moon, ChatGPT provided six concise suggestions, while DeepSeek took a different approach—delivering a fully fleshed-out 387-word story in seconds.
While the narrative lacked complexity, its speed and structure were impressive, showing that DeepSeek might be more than just a research tool—it could evolve into a genuine creative writing assistant.
Learning and Research: Holding Its Own Against the Giants
In the field of education and research, DeepSeek continues to prove itself a worthy competitor. When asked to explain the causes of World War I, it provided a concise but comprehensive summary, effectively outlining key events leading to the war.
While ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini offered more detailed accounts, DeepSeek’s ability to present clear and digestible information showcased its potential as a learning aid.
A New Era for AI?
The emergence of DeepSeek marks a pivotal moment in the global AI race. Despite the vast resources invested by U.S. tech firms, a Chinese competitor has managed to replicate—and in some cases surpass—established industry standards at a fraction of the cost.
Professor Neil Lawrence from the University of Cambridge compared this moment to the history of the steam engine, where James Watt’s improvements made all the difference. "There’s plenty of space for budding James Watts to emerge," he said. "And they are less likely to come from established players."
With DeepSeek already making waves, one thing is clear: the future of AI is far from settled, and the competition has only just begun.
